The < < REWIND < < series of this newsletter takes an occasional look at world-first products from the past.
Fortunately, not only can we delve into the history of this week’s product, but you also have the opportunity to buy an exceptionally Limited-Edition version of it to celebrate its 50th anniversary. (Limited to one per customer, worldwide).
The Casio QW02 was the first ever watch released by Casio in 1974. Not only that, but it was ALSO the world’s first digital watch which incorporated a calendar that automatically adjusted for longer and shorter months.
With the switch from mechanical to quartz watches in the 1970s (which caused the Swiss Quartz Crisis), Casio built on the expertise it developed in LSI technology from their range of digital calculators.

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the QW02, Casio has re-created a tribute to this watch. It is called the Casiotron TRN-50. It has a limited worldwide production run of only 4,000 units… and they are selling out fast. (Casio’s USA website has a waitlist at the time of writing).
The Casio TRN-50 pays homage to the original QW02, but has been re-created with some cutting-edge technology:
- Solar charging
- Radio controlled time adjustment
- Pair with your smartphone
